Part 2 of the Gentle Autumn Series
Missed Part 1? Read The First Day of Fall: Letting Go, Beginning Again, and Seeing Beauty in the Shift.
The excitement of the first day of fall has settled in.
The mums and the pumpkin Freddie picked out during his class field trip to the pumpkin patch are on the porch, though I still need to pick up the cornstalks. The boys are already looking forward to choosing the pumpkins they’ll carve later this month. The leaves are beginning to change, and when I looked out the kitchen window this morning, I realized the woods behind our home had turned almost entirely gold. Somehow, it feels like it happened all at once. The air carries that unmistakable autumn feeling that invites us to slow down and savor the season.
But everyday life continues.
The lunch boxes still need packed. The laundry still piles up. The dogs still need to go outside before the sun comes up. The school mornings still arrive whether we’re ready or not.
And perhaps that is where the true beauty of autumn lives.
Not in perfectly styled homes or elaborate seasonal decorations, but in the gentle rhythms that help us create peace in the middle of ordinary days.
When Life Feels Busy
I do not enter a new season with good intentions to stay ahead and get more organized. Everyday real life reminds me that perfection is never the goal.
What my family truly needs is not a perfect home.
We need a peaceful one.
A home where there is room to breathe.
A home where connection matters more than checking every box.
A home where grace is present when things don’t go according to plan.

Embracing Gentle Rhythms
I love routines.
As a wife and mother, routines help me feel grounded and organized. They provide a sense of order in everyday life, and children often thrive when they know what to expect. Our morning routines, mealtimes, and bedtime habits help create security and predictability throughout the day.
At the same time, I’ve learned that routines and rhythms are not opposites. They work beautifully together.
A routine provides structure.
A rhythm provides grace.
Like the changing seasons, rhythms have movement. They allow us to adapt when life shifts while still holding onto the routines that matter most.
Autumn is a wonderful reminder of this balance. School schedules return, evenings grow darker, and family life settles into familiar patterns. Yet the season also invites us to slow down, spend more time outdoors, notice the changing leaves, and make room for the simple joys that only autumn brings.
This is the kind of rhythm I’m embracing.
Leaving space to step out onto the porch and breathe in the cool, misty air on a dark, cloudy fall morning. Lingering over a warm cup of coffee before the house wakes up. Pausing to admire the brilliant orange leaves of the tree outside my living room window.
In a season that seems to pass all too quickly, these small moments help me slow down and savor it.
The routines provide the framework. The rhythms help us savor the season.
Without routines, our days can feel chaotic.
Without rhythms, our days can feel rushed.
But together they help create a home that is both peaceful and purposeful.
The Gift of Seasonal Living
Autumn gently reminds us that life moves in seasons.
Trees release what they no longer need.
Fields rest after a season of growth.
Nature does not rush.
There is wisdom in that.
Perhaps we, too, can let go of expectations that no longer serve us.
Perhaps we can release the pressure to do more, be more, or keep up with everyone else.
And perhaps we can embrace the life God has placed directly in front of us.
The children laughing in the backyard.
The dog waiting by the door.
The dishes that tell the story of another shared meal.
The simple gifts of home.

Learning to See the Season Through a Child’s Eyes
One of my favorite things about this stage of motherhood is watching the way children embrace each new season.
My six-year-old son, Freddie, loves to celebrate every holiday and every season that comes along. His excitement begins long before the calendar officially changes. He eagerly counts down the days, talks about what makes each season special, and fills our home with anticipation for what is ahead.
When autumn arrives, he’s ready to fully experience the promise of all the simple traditions that make this time of year feel special.
The changing leaves and wanting to rake them all up on the first day of fall (even though only a few have fallen, but luckily enough near the woodline to rake up a small pile that both boys jumped and rolled around in)!
The pumpkins and decorations.
His enthusiasm has a way of spilling over into the rest of our household. While I can sometimes become focused on responsibilities, schedules, and all the things that need to get done, our boys remind us to pause and enjoy the season we’re in.
There is something beautiful about seeing autumn through the eyes of a child.
Children don’t worry about creating the perfect season. They simply delight in it.
They teach us to notice the small things, celebrate simple joys, and welcome each new season with gratitude and wonder.
More than once, Freddie’s excitement has encouraged me to slow down and embrace the beauty of what is right in front of me rather than rushing ahead to what’s next.
Perhaps that is one of the gifts of autumn.
Not just the changing leaves or cozy evenings, but the opportunity to fully experience the season we’re living in and all that it has to offer.
Looking Ahead
Autumn is, in many ways, a season of letting go.
The trees understand this well.
Next week in the Gentle Autumn Series, we’ll explore what falling leaves can teach us about releasing what no longer serves us and trusting God with the seasons of change.
