A Four-Year-Old’s Big Day: Prek-K Screening Morning Magic

There are some moments in motherhood that arrive quietly, without fanfare, yet shimmer all on their own. Today was one of those — the morning my four‑year‑old woke up ready for his Pre‑K screening, a day he’d been talking about with that sweet, still‑learning‑to‑articulate excitement only a four‑year‑old can carry.

“I’m so excited.”

For the last week, every single night, he’d look up at me with those bright eyes and say, “I’m so excited.”
Not rushed. Not dramatic. Just pure, bubbling-over joy in his tiny voice — the kind that makes you pause and smile because childhood is happening right in front of you.

🧥 The Outfit He Chose Himself

He took his job very seriously: picking out his clothes the night before.
A Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Tasmanian Devil T‑shirt — because of course the Looney Tunes crew needed to come along for the adventure.
Then, because the morning was cool, he layered a long‑sleeve dinosaur shirt over it.
Black army‑print shorts completed the look — a little mismatched, a little chaotic, and absolutely perfect.

It was the kind of outfit only a four‑year‑old could dream up: confident, whimsical, and ready for anything.

🍳 The Breakfast Plan (Which Changed, Naturally)

The night before, while I was prepping things, I asked him what he wanted for his special morning breakfast. He said waffles.
But after I prepared the waffles, in true preschooler fashion, he announced that actually… he wanted pancakes. And then he also decided on a hard‑boiled egg.

So pancakes and a hard‑boiled egg it was — because flexibility is a love language when you’re raising little ones.

“Flexibility is a love language when you’re raising little ones.”

🚀 Ready the Moment He Woke Up

I still had to wake him, but the second his eyes opened, he was ready.
No slow stretching, no rolling over, no “five more minutes.”
He sat up with purpose — that same little spark he’d carried all week — and slipped into his clothes with the determination of a boy who knew today was special.

Always moving ahead.
Always wanting to do everything his big brother does.
Always reaching for the next thing, the next milestone, the next moment that makes him feel just a little bigger.

“Watching him reach for the next milestone is equal parts pride and ache – the sweetest bittersweet of motherhood.”

There was no dragging feet, no sleepy slowness. Just pure readiness — the kind that reminds you how quickly these early years are unfolding.

🌼 A Morning I’ll Remember

Pre‑K screening might seem small in the grand scheme of childhood, but today it felt big.
It felt like watching him step into a new chapter, one he’s been anticipating with his whole little heart.

Even big brother Freddie was excited for him — giving him an encouraging hug and kiss while they were curled up together on the loveseat waiting to leave. Freddie was heading to summer rec for a few hours, but he still made space for his little brother’s big moment.

And as I hugged and kissed my four‑year‑old goodbye before Dad took him to school, I felt that familiar mix of pride and tenderness. The kind that reminds me motherhood is made of these tiny, sparkling moments.
The kind that has you checking the clock, wondering how he’s doing, praying God gives him courage and confidence — and that most of all, he has fun.

“Moments where he is growing, right in front of me – and I get to be the one who witnesses it.”

Moments where a four‑year‑old says “I’m so excited” every night for a week.
Moments where pancakes replace waffles.
Moments where he chooses Bugs Bunny and dinosaurs because he can’t imagine leaving either behind.

Moments where he is growing, right in front of me — and I get to be the one who witnesses it.
