Some of the sweetest parts of my day aren’t loud or dramatic. They’re quiet, almost easy to miss — the kinds of moments that happen while I’m standing at the kitchen sink, rinsing breakfast plates, doing dinner dishes, or wiping little fingerprints off the counter. And so often, those moments are made possible because of my husband.
Without fail, he feeds the birds, and he keeps fresh water in both birdbaths tucked near the woods.
He cleans everything out when it needs it.
It’s just something he does, quietly, faithfully, like a gentle rhythm woven into the heartbeat of our home.
“Love often looks like the quiet work no one sees – bird food, clean birdbaths, and a man who tends our home with steady hands.”
And because of him, I get to enjoy one of my favorite simple pleasures: watching the birds right outside our kitchen window.
There’s the little birdhouse hanging on the back deck, close enough that I can see tiny heads peek out while I’m doing dishes, or sometimes watch the parents flying back and forth and chirping with each other.

And almost every day, we see a pair of cardinals – bright red and soft brown – visiting the yard together. We hold the sweet thought that they’re Grandma Bonnie and Grandpa Jim stopping by, a little whisper of love that lingers. We often see them on the deck taking turns at the food, one watching while the other eats, moving with that gentle attentiveness that makes us smile. There’s something comforting about watching them appear as a pair, settling on the branches or dipping into the birdbaths, as if they’re still part of our everyday moments.
“Sometimes love shows up as a pair of cardinals on the deck, reminding us of those we miss.”
The Merlin Bird ID app is such a lovely companion – completely free – if you want to learn who’s visiting — not as a task, but as a soft addition to the moment. I love using it in the mornings on the porch. Mornings seem to be the best time to hear the biggest variety of birds.
And out by the woods, the two birdbaths stay busy with splashing wings, bright feathers, and the kind of peaceful commotion that makes the whole yard feel alive. Sometimes the kids help Dad by carrying and dumping the big, heavy jugs of water with his help – their little hands wrapped around the jug while he steadies it, all of them working together.

It’s such a small thing, really.
But it’s also not small at all.
His care — for the birds, for our home, for the quiet beauty around us — becomes a gift I get to enjoy every single day. It’s one of the ways he loves us, loves this place we’re building together, loves the life we’re growing.
And I’m so thankful for him.
For his steadiness.
For being our rock.
For the way he notices the little things and tends to them without complaint.
Sometimes love looks like bird food and freshly filled birdbaths.
And I’m grateful — deeply, quietly grateful — for all of it.
Your Gentle Reflection
Take a quiet moment for yourself
1. Quiet Care
What are the small, almost invisible ways someone in your home shows love without saying a word?
2. Noticing Moments
When was the last time you paused and noticed a moment made possible by someone else’s tenderness?
3. Children’s Memories
What small routines do you think your children will remember someday as “the way Dad loved us”?
